#19 - a large geode spore/urchin made out of paper mache shell covered in coils I made with recycled thermal receipt paper. I then glazed the interior with resin and built a separate stand out of a recycled cardboard tube from the masking tape I use while working, painted it and covered it with leaves I cut out of recycled book pages and added the thorns I made from recycled junk mail and their envelopes. #19 measures 7 inches in diameter and 4 inches high.
I can't calculate the actual amount of time it takes me to create each one of these little treasures because I don't create one at a time, I move from one to the other as I am waiting for the glue to set or paste to dry. It does take me several days to actually make enough material for each pod.
The pods/urchin/geodes are an elaborate project, I have to cut the paper in small manageable bits, and then separate them for they have a nature to stick at the cut side. I prepare my own paste and proceed to make each pod which in average takes about one hour, because I have to layer, and layer, and layer till it is thick enough to be solid when it dries. Each pod takes 24 hours to dry completely. By the time the shell dries I have already decided what design spin I want to take and I proceed to select the pieces and carefully glue each piece in place holding online it long enough to take hold and then let dry overnight.
These pods/individual urchins are stunning in their simplicity, they lend themselves as a single glorious paper sculpture or an incredible collection you can display on a mantle or table or hang on a wall.
