Original 1885 Beam Rectifier online of Distilled Spirits 200 Civil War Tax Stamp Distillery Bar Milwaukee WI Wisconsin Brewery Moonshine Gift

An ornate original, rare ($200.) antique 1885 government issued document for the Business of Rectifier of Distilled Spirits issued by the US Internal Revenue Service! This was signed by Revenue Collector I. M. Beam, in Milwaukee, WI. This document has beautiful graphics and is the fanciest issue that was used during the era! Engraved on the top center is the Greek God, Mercury, with the medical symbol (snake & staff) in hand, leaning on a large woven wicker, glass bottle, sitting next to wooden kegs, a moonshine still, along with a funnel lying on the ground! On the lower left corner is a cornucopia over flowing with fruits, vegetables and flowers! There is a snake on the right side corner with some acorns.

The government used this stamp as a tax for selling, dispensing and distilling liquor to raise money to pay for the Civil War. In fine print on the bottom is: "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing", "$200 Dollars Per Year" near the bottom, and "Stamp For Special Tax" near the top. To prevent forgeries, the document is watermarked USIR!

The front of the document measures 8" by 7", the coupons are folded behind, so the total length is 14". There are six hole punches (to void), the borders are chippy/tattered small splits, two spots on the back, a couple smudges and age toning, otherwise, condition is very good...a beautiful, rare document!
