online 'Peace Within The Labyrinth' necklace .....

..... as depicted at Rocky Valley and known as 'The Rocky Valley Labyrinths - as there are two carvings. This is near the River Trevillet, nr Tintagel, Cornwall, U.K.

The carvings can be seen on an exposed rock face of dark shale and could date back to the early Bronze Age. (1800 - 1400 BC). However, a second theory suggests metal tools were required to make the crisp incisions into the rock, thus dating the Labyrinths to the Celtic (Iron Age) which is 500 BC - AD 200. The third theory is that the carvings are relatively modern, and not dissimilar to examples carved into stones of the nearby mill which now stands derelict. Theorists consider whether a tenant working at the once mill could have executed the carvings......

To 'walk' a Labyrinth is an ancient practice, embraced by many faiths to aid concentration, for spiritual centering and in some faiths - for quiet prayer time. The peaceful 'journey' along one path (not distracted as in a maze) one can focus and quieten one's mind. The single path represents the journey to our own centre and then entering out into the world again. This necklace reflects the peace one can find when entering the single path.

The focal is an artisan handcrafted ceramic pendant in a soft/light brown hue with a subtle darker tone introduced on the slightly raised outer path detailing. Directly above the Labyrinth is an horn bead and directly above that a smoke fired artisan created ceramic sphere with pleasing 'soft' glaze tones of mint, grey and off white. The complete pendant 'drop' is 7cm (which includes the pendant and 2 beads) with the ceramic disc pendant having a 4cm diam. Along the randomly knotted natural/undyed waxed linen cord are assorted beads - artisan handmade glazed/unglazed ceramic, horn cone bead and Czech 'aged' stripe glass seed beads. The cord is extendable - from a 9" 'drop' (so around 18") to a 14 1/2" 'drop' (so around 28" - 29"). Images 5 & 6 show the linen cord at a shorter 'drop' and a longer 'drop' length. The complete necklace weighs 26.3 grams.
