Unusual Color and Pattern

When you see old damask towels, red is usually the predominant accent color on a white or tan linen. Blue is the next common color. Brown is seen, but not that frequently. This was probably because these were produced during Victorian times and the Victorians liked lush and rich colors.

This one is a bit of an anomaly in two respects: one, the chocolate brown accents on a rich golden ground and, two, the almost cubist decoration in the accent panel.

Measuring 40 inches long (not including the 4 inch fringe at each end with a grand total of 48 inches) and 22 inches wide selvage to selvage, it is in excellent condition. There is still a remnant of the original label and a penciled price of .25 next to it. This could be remedied by a gentle laundering if you wish to use it , but it would be a shame to see the rest of the label destroyed.

The pattern on the natural linen is one of leaf and vine alternating with scalloped circles.

The inset has cubist tops framed with geometric shapes.

I love this towel for both the color and the unusual bottom panel. It looks great wherever it is displayed.
