Coatlicue
Coatlicue is known as "skirt of serpents" in Nahuatl (native American language in Mexico). In the Aztec mythology she simbolizes fertility, life and death, re-birth, mother of Huitzilopochtli. She is also known as Tonantzin, our venerated mother and also known as Teteoinan.
There are representations of Coatlicue and in all, she is represented with snakes throughout her body. This particular image of Coatlicue has a skirt of serpents. She appears in a state of transformation as her face is of death and the rest of her body is of flesh. The original of this Coatlicue is found in a museum in Mexico (see image).
