Rilla of Ingleside by L M Montgomery (1921, 1st edition, 6th impression, 1923)
Rilla of Ingleside features the youngest daughter of Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. It is the eighth of nine books in the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but was the sixth "Anne" novel in publication order. It takes place during World War I and reveals much of what Canadians experienced in this painful period. Originally published simultaneously in Canada by McClelland & Company (Toronto) and in the US by Frederick A. online Stokes (New York) on August 4, 1921, this copy is published by A. L. Burt and is the sixth impression (June 15, 1923). No DJ.
With a beautiful full-color frontispiece by M. L. Kirk, this edition is in fine/very good condition with only a few spots and pages yellowed due to age. The cover is dark brown cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the front cover and on the spine (which is now worn away). Only a bit of fraying on the top and bottom of the spine and one corner affect the condition. The pages are clean and tight. 370 pp + 4 pp of ads. Wikpedia notes that “At some point after Montgomery's death in 1942, publishers quietly trimmed Rilla of Ingleside of a few thousand words, removing among other things passages containing historically accurate but now offensive anti-German sentiment. The trimmed version was the only available "in print" version for decades, until a new, restored and annotated edition of Rilla of Ingleside, edited by Benjamin Lefebvre . . .and Andrea McKenzie, was published by Viking Canada in October 2010."
A wonderful copy of a first edition of this rare title. Please see NashBooks for more titles by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
