Hopi Artist David Dawangyumptewa Print Dance of the White Dragon Fly

Hopi-Navajo artist David Dawangyumptewa (1957-present) is a artist of the Water Clan. David says he “would like to be thought of as a painter of mythical or spiritual subjects.” His magnificent paintings are distinguished by his use of jewel-like colors and Hopi symbolism. The style and content of Dawangyumptewa's work is reflective of his Hopi background. His work is abstracted variations on traditional water symbols, frogs, dragonflies, and turtles and almost always contains figures interacting with animals.

On the back of this magnificent print he has written, “in a mystical environment, there is a place where dragon flies are born to help germinate life among the waters. At the beginning of the early stages of development, the white dragon fly makes its appearance to nurture the eggs. At this time, blessings are given to the baby dragon flies and bestow upon them that they will have the ability to help all of the powers to bring moisture to the land.”

This print is exquisitly colorful, vivid and bright depicting a magical abstract spiritual vision.
