The World War II prisoner-of-war account of American airman Kenneth W. Simmons (1921-1969). Simmons, a member of the Eighth Air Force, parachuted from a badly damaged plane on a mission to Mainz and was captured by the Germans in October 1944. He was imprisoned at Stalag Luft III (on the western edge of Poland) and online at the end of April 1945 was liberated by General Patton in person.

Inscribed to Burks Hamner, first general manager of the Palo Alto Cabana Motel, in November 1962. The motel, which Simmons mentions in the inscription, officially opened its doors a few days later. This plush hotel, where the Beatles stayed in August 1965, is still a going concern.
