Antique Amish Puzzle Ball Pin Cushion Folk Art Medium Size
This is a sweet puzzle ball pin cushion is made from a velvet fabric with hand stitching. It is soft-stuffed but firm. There are also some small scattered areas where the fabric is worn.
It measures approximately 4" in diameter.
Although called pin cushions, these were actually for ornamental rather than actual use, something the Amish would refer to as being "plain and fancy." Most would be hung in a cupboard or from a online mantel shelf. As reference, refer to "Bits and Pieces, Textile Traditions," page 34, or Patricia Herr's "Amish Arts of Lancaster County," page 56.
My dear friend's mother was born in Lancaster County Pennsylvania in the 1930's and collected these Amish puzzle balls and pin cushions throughout her life, brought them to Texas and preserved them, as she was an avid collector of many fine items.
