Description: This is a lovely winter scene by the German artist Sigmund Landsinger. Because of the technique used, this is much more rare than a standard etching, and it is likely that only a few were made. To produce this monotype the artist would have applied black and green inks directly to a plate as if he were creating a painting and then made an impression on paper using a hand press.

This is a very fine work that masterfully captures the effect of winter with sparkling ice in the treetops, snow on the trunks of the trees, and reflections on the ice-covered stream.

Sigmund Landsinger was a skilled painter and printmaker, born in Vukovar in eastern Croatia in 1855. He studied painting in Vienna, and later continued his studies in Rome and Florence with the support of a scholarship. In Florence he studied with prominent Swiss symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901). Landsigner moved to Munich about 1890, and he is now considered a German painter. The artist's body of work includes oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints.
