French Bronze Nativity Manger Scene Baby Jesus Mary Joseph Manger Medal
The Nativity of Jesus has been a major subject of Christian art since the 4th century. The artistic depictions of the Nativity or birth of Jesus, celebrated at Christmas, are based on the narratives in the Bible, in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and further elaborated by written, oral and artistic tradition.
This medallic art shows a starlit scene where the almost naked baby Jesus is placed laying in a manger and "adored" by his mother Mary and his stepfather Joseph. The Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, hovers above the Holy Family. On the reverse are three cherubs floating on clouds.
The medal is signed on the front by the French sculptor and medalist Auguste Albert Herbemont (1874–1953).
Crafted in bronze and marked so on the bottom rim. Measures 2 1/4 inches wide x 2 5/8" tall with the orb.
