The Battle Creek Sanitarium was a world-renowned health resort in Battle Creek, Michigan. It started in 1866 on health principles advocated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and from 1876 to 1943 was managed by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg.

John Harvey Kellogg (February 26, 1852 – December 14, 1943) was an American medical doctor, nutritionist, inventor, health activist, eugenicist, and businessman. Kellogg was a major leader in progressive health reform, particularly in the second phase of the clean living movement. He wrote extensively on science and health. His approach to "biologic living" combined scientific knowledge with Adventist beliefs, promoting health reform, and temperance. His promotion of developing anaphrodisiac foods was based on these beliefs.

Many of the vegetarian foods that Kellogg developed and offered his patients were publicly marketed: Kellogg is best known today for the invention of the breakfast cereal corn flakes, originally intended to be an anaphrodisiac, made by his brother, Will Keith Kellogg.

This book is online one of a series of four. It focuses on promoting what the "experts" deemed healthy habits early in the 20th century. There are some very interesting opinions and advice offered. It covers everything from skin care to posture and even has a chapter about proper clothing. I particularly enjoy the chapter "Health Habits in Drinking".

A 1994 movie called "The Road to Wellness" is based upon Kellogg and the Battle Creek Sanitarium.
