This is an early 20th century antique Asian bangle. It displays a continuous online hand worked design of two dragons chasing a flaming pearl. The design employs techniques of repousse, engraving and piercing. This bangle has an inner diameter of 2 1/2” and measures 9/16” wide. Antique Asian pewter is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. It more closely resembles silver than current pewter and is tarnish resistant. Very good antique condition. (There is a very small dent on the edge of the bangle between the two dragon heads.)
The two dragons in pursuit of a flaming pearl is an ancient, well-known oriental theme. The dragons pursue the pearl because it's a giver of joy and represents light and divine wisdom. The dragon's undulations mimic the rhythm of the dragon dance. Dragons are thought to bring good luck and life-giving rain. The dance dates back to the Chinese Han dynasty.
