This is an antique art nouveau frame with a cartoon by Charles Twelvetrees. Charles Twelvetrees (1872-1948) was a prolific illustrator, known for his portrayals of mischievous children. I believe that the print is contemporaneous to the frame, and most likely dates to the 1910s. The frame is made of wood but painted to resemble hammered copper, with raised detailing influenced by art nouveau design. Another clue to age are the headless online squared iron nail used at the back of the frame. The print probably was taken from a calendar - it is unprinted on its backside. The frame has a glass front. It measures 8 3/4” by 10 5/8” with a display area of 5 1/2” by 7 1/2”. The frame is in excellent condition while the cartoon has a bit of moisture staining on the edges, hidden by the frame. (see photo). This is a beautiful frame - the original Twelvetrees print is a bonus!
