Lippincott & Co.; Philadelphia. The book contains two color maps (one of which is fold-out), a frontispiece portrait and numerous full-page plates (all illustrations are present). There is an Index at the back. From a review: "Baker spent 12 months exploring the Nile and the area surrounding it. His explorations included the Atbara, Settite, Roya, Salaam, Angrab, Rahad, Dinder, and the Blue Nile. Baker states that 'The interest attached to these portions of Africa differs entirely from that of the White Nile regions, as the whole of Upper Egypt and Abyssinia is capable of development, and is inhabited by races either Mohammedan or Christian; while Central Africa is peopled by a hopeless race of savages, for whom there is no prospect of civilization.'"

Condition:
Some light scratches to the bottom half of the front cover; some "bubbling" under the cloth at the back cover; cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine, and at the corner tips. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. There is a 1" tear at the top edge of the dedication page. Consistent smudges, stains and foxing to the pages; heavy foxing to the title page and frontispiece. Ex- library copy with an old ID label affixed to the spine, an old library label affixed to the front pastedown, and a diagonal strip of paper affixed to the rear pastedown (an tanned outline of the strip appears on the opposing end paper; ID code written in pen at the top of the rear pastedown. There are vertical crease lines along the length of the spine. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
