Zapotec rug, diamonds and grecas, online handwoven in Oaxaca, México

This is one of the most traditional designs of the Zapotec culture. The four points of Zapotec diamond represent the four elements: earth, air, online fire and water. The symmetry of the diamond signifies a pyramid reflected vertically. The “Grecas” are Mitla's geometric patterns an archeological site in the state of Oaxaca and represents the stages of life. The rug has the same pattern on both sides.
