This is a very fine cloth. It is a Ragi Hotang from the Lake Toba region of Central Sumatra, Indonesia. I purchase the cloth in around 1992 on Samosir Island. It was in its current condition when I bought it. Date of the cloth is likely 60s or 70s.
The Ulos Ragi Hotang is a ceremonial cloth that was usually worn over the should by men.
The weaving is wonderful, there is a subtle Ikat stippled pattern running through deep blue central panel, this is framed by wide bands of deep maroon/brown. The cloth ends in spectacular twined geometric designs the origins of which extend back centuries.
There are breaks in the fabric in 4 places - one in the supplementary weft pattern, one in the blue Ikat area, and two along the edge on one side, close to the mid point of the length. I am happy to provide photos of all damaged areas - or any other detail - upon request.
Width 38" X Length 92"
The supplementary weft band is about 9" wide.
2.25" of twining additionally at each end - some of which is frayed.
The fringe at both ends of this textile is damaged to online the point of being without fringe to speak of I can't imagine what befell this fine cloth. The damage is reflected in the low price - which makes for a great study cloth.
