Amber is both the name of the material, and in many cases also the color.
Amber is a class of resins from plants that fossilize. There are 5 different amber materials, different colors, different ages, and they are mined in different locations. Generally the lighter yellowish amber is Copalite, a young amber from 100's of years to a few million years. Amber that is darker, and older is found in many locations, mainly in the Baltic, off the coasts of Russia and Poland "Baltic Amber". Dark amber also comes from Sumatra, Indonesia, and other locations. Many amber materials will fluoresce, giving a bluing sheen in bright sunlight or fluorescent light. Some (Sumatran) give a deep red color.
