In Japanese "Shiki" means lacquerware. The history of Shiki ( lacquerware) in Japan reaches back many centuries to the Jomon period. The sap of the lacquer tree has traditionally been used in Japan. As the substance is poisonous to the touch until it dries, the creation of stunning lacquered pieces has long been practiced only by skilled, dedicated artisans.
The stunning Shiki bowl, tray, and plate are in varying degrees of good condition. The large bowl shows very little wear-- the interior is clear and gorgeous. The smaller dish has some wear and minimal dullness. The tray has the most wear; it has a bit of staining around the rim and shows some dullness in the lacquer finish. They are still stunningly beautiful pieces.
