This is a hand made rubbing of a monumental memorial 'brass' engraving to remember Lady Katherine Howard, wife of Baron Howard of Effingham. Lady Howard is shown here wearing an heraldic mantle; it carries the coats of arms of both herself and her husband. The pedimental headdress completes her outfit. At her feet is depicted a squirrel, a most unusual symbol to have used as the engravings usually depicted dogs (for faithfulness) lions (for bravery) etc.; this may be explained by the fact that squirrels where kept as pets in the Middle Ages. Monumental memorials like this were engraved into lattern - a mixture of copper and zinc, but which had the look of brass -and laid either on the floor or wall of their local parish church. This one of Lady Katherine Howard is dated 1535 and is in Saint Mary's, Lambeth, London, England

Each brass rubbing is created using a hard wax compound, in this case gold and silver, and rubbed over a stretched special rag paper. The facsimilie plate from which this rubbing was taken is just one of many exhibited by The London Brass Rubbing Centre during their workshop at The Washington National Cathedral, Washington DC and more online recently on a nationwide tour of the USA
This rubbing measures 36" X 15" and as the wax compound is stable it has been polished to make it shine.

Lovely rubbings like this make wonderful wall hangings and are particularly impressive framed under glass. It's also possible to hang them, like a tapestry, with wooden dowels or a brass rod.

I will send you this rubbing, rolled and secure in a strong mailing tube, fully insured during transit.
