Product code: Vintage Royal Winton Grimwades Chintz "Summertime" online Ascot Shaped Plate with Gilt Trim

This charming pre-1960's Royal Winton Grimwades chintz Ascot shaped plate has been decorated in the "Summertime" pattern and has gilt trim. Summertime was first introduced in 1932 and was Royal Winton's most popular pattern. The vibrant motif consists of roses, daisies, bluebells and other colorful blossoms along with green foliage on a cream ground. The piece has been trimmed in shiny gold paint. The plate has been made in the square Ascot shape with rounded sides and corners which have a nipped in design.

The plate is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As a vintage item, the piece shows signs of age including fine crazing to the glaze. There are stilt marks from the kiln present on the back along with flecks of material caught in the glaze, all of which are related to the production process and are mentioned for accuracy.

The foot of the plate bears the circa 1940's green Grimwades art deco circular backstamp reading "ROYAL WINTON" along with the letter "A". The words "GRIMWADES MADE IN ENGLAND" appear inside of it. There is also a hand lettered number "2" in shiny gold paint along with the pattern name "Summertime" in blue. The plate is also impressed with the numbers "4" and "49". It measures 8.75" on a diagonal and is just under 7.75" by 7.75" square.

This lovely plate would be a great addition to a collection of vintage Royal Winton Summertime, or works equally well as a stand alone decorative accent. A great choice for serving small snacks, or can also be displayed on a table or in a cabinet. A very pretty vintage find!

A note on the maker: Originally known as Grimwade Brothers, Royal Winton was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade in 1885. The company began decorating earthenware with chintz designs in the early 1920's and by the 1960's introduced more than 60 different patterns. Their tightly grouped all-over floral decoration had a distinctive look and was quite popular, but was also labor intensive to produce. The associated costs lead Royal Winton to cease manufacturing its chintz range in the 1960's, only resuming it in the 1990's.
